A Sort of Garden
25.8. – 12.9.2010
Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu

A sort of garden is flourishing. The man on the video is stuck by the window, looking for the figurative keys to his new life. He is about to become a father. His feelings are in accordance with the handbooks: His spouse is huffing and puffing and growing somber, getting to know the baby is not a piece of cake, and his work is hard hit. At the maternity clinic, he raises eyebrows by being energetic – at home, by being uncommunicative.

Marko Lampisuo’s exhibition at Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu is a realistic interpretation of today’s parenthood. The works are based on the artist’s diary entries from the year 2006. At the maternity clinic that the exhibition refers to, it has been noticed that the participation of fathers-to-be in parenthood classes has increased. The clinic would have been happy to include Lampisuo’s video work in their course material. Unfortunately, however, the small course groups at the maternity clinics soon became mass classes at the hospitals due to productivity actions. A Sort of Garden verbalizes and illustrates the emotions faced by every generation in the framework of their own culture and time.

The exhibition consists of a video work and photogravure works, the latter of which feature everyday baby products casting shadows over garden scenes. The works were completed in 2009 and are now on display in Helsinki for the first time. Previously, they have been on display at the Lönnström Art Museum in Rauma, the Honkahovi art center in Mänttä, the Aine Art Museum in Tornio, the Tampere Art Museum, and the Renovation Centre Toivo in Pori.

The video A Sort of Garden has been chosen as a part of the compilation of the View Tour of AV-arkki, the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art. The sound of the video is by Taito Kantomaa and the producer is Tuuli Penttinen-Lampisuo. The video has English subtitles and is suitable for all age groups. The work is distributed by AV-arkki.

Marko Lampisuo was born in Turku, Finland, in 1970. He graduated as an artist in Tampere. Since 2004, he has been living and working in Pori.

The exhibition has been kindly supported by AVEK (The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture), the Arts Council of Satakunta, the Lapland Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Arts Council of Finland, VISEK (the promotion center for visual arts), and Himmelblau Printmaking Studio.
