The Gone with the party exhibition is a joint exhibition of two Turku-based artists. The idea for the exhibition came at the studio when the artists realized how surprisingly similar the starting points for their works were. Valtari and Hedberg work quickly and color is an important element for both of them. The Gone with the party paintings depict the wavy shape of life with ups and downs alternating in live motion.
Jaana Valtari (b. 1972) paints party-themed environmental portraits in which she explores group dynamics and the experience of being left out or being an outsider. A party is a metaphor for life with its peaks and low points. The climax of a party includes a hint of loss. The night is no longer young. The Finnish way of celebrating provides a fertile soil for the paintings. It offers the right amount of tension and conflict. Valtari is fascinated by the openness, possibilities and freedom of the painting process. “I want my works to breath and be alive and in motion. It is hard and dangerous to entirely complete a piece. If all the possibilities have been used, something has died.”
Sini-Meri Hedberg’s (b. 1972) painting style is quick and when she begins working chance acts as her inspiration. Hedberg builds a picture by exploring the variation of color and movement. The gestures created on the canvas during the process take the painting towards the final outcome. “The atmospheres in my paintings are like waves. Sometimes there are breaking waves, other times everything is calm. My works are guided by the questions about my own varying selves and about a person plunging into emotions, an individual struggling in the whirl of events and time. The wavy motion and its comparability to life itself is the core of my paintings.”
