Recording, forgetting and storytelling are the starting points for the video work Golden Age and the photographic series Springtime in Andrei Tarkovsky Park.

“I have gone through 66 hours, 34 minutes, 12 seconds and 3 frames of video footage and now I want to show you this.”

The video work Golden Age is based on video material recorded over fifteen years. The material is simultaneously a relic, waste, a treasure and a burden. In most cases, it tells about something completely different than what the original intention was.

“I have not looked at these pictures once over the years, but if my home was on fire, these are what I would rescue from the smoke and flames.”

Over the course of history, man has so far taken 3,507,052,340,160,890,107 photographs and recorded 31,536,042,083 hours of video footage.

“I heard you tell me everything, but I forgot what it was.”

Video work Golden Age is the first edit of a serially structured process. The work continues and changes on its every installation, recreating new stories from these leftovers of moments. The next edit of Golden Age can be seen at Mänttä Art Festival XVII from 10 June until 31 August 2012.

“Andrei Tarkovsky Park is located on an empty lot that was once occupied by a school which was demolished due to mold.”

The photographic series Springtime in Andrei Tarkovsky Park documents an invisible place. The series aims to create a visual representation of what made the place personally important. The pictures show cherry trees, clay aggregate and a shortcut. The lot is empty and no one is there.

The exhibition has been supported by the Arts Council of Finland and AVEK.

Maija Blåfield’s (b. 1973) works have previously been featured at Photographic Gallery Hippolyte Studio, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Kluuvi Gallery of the Helsinki Art Museum, Kunsthalle Helsinki, as well as group exhibitions in Finland and abroad, at film festivals and on television.
