What Do We See When We See Dark Things?
23.11. – 16.12.2018

Open as usual on Independence Day 6.12.2018 at 12-5 pm.

“I’ll risk saying this: Having said these words I know that I must attempt to say more, and in saying more perhaps – who knows – I’ll come to think stillness in a way that I have never thought before.” Yve Lomax

I cannot depict total darkness for you because even if you look at a black photograph that I took of darkness, you will still see the light reflecting off the surface of the photo. But when you look at the image or read these words, you will not see them as they are, but as they were. You see them the way they were at the moment when light began to travel from them towards you.

In the exhibition What Do We See When We See Dark Things?, Maija Laurinen poses questions regarding time and change, darkness and silence, absence and the transient nature of the present moment.

Maija Laurinen (b. 1978) is a visual artist who is fascinated by elusive phenomena and boundaries that are perceptually challenging, impossible to address directly and sometimes beyond our reach altogether. She works with moving image and photography as well as light and text. Laurinen has studied both cinematography and photography and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where she is also currently pursuing doctoral studies. Her works have been on display internationally at various solo and group exhibitions. The exhibition What Do We See When We See Dark Things? at Galleria Huuto will be on display for the first time.

The exhibition is supported by the City of Nurmes and cultural services.
