A Table For Six
Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu
23.1.–3.2.2008

The invitation was open and I accepted it myself, too. I went into the house and the table was for six.

A house or its yard is often present in my works as a physical building, a situation, as scenery, or as the location for a photograph or a video.

I pick a character and photograph a situation of which I later compile video projections to a gallery or other provided place. Eventually, my characters change and take shape: They mingle with each others in changing situations which are captured in the pictures. The characters, spaces, items, and the atmosphere of the photographs deal with my experiences of houses I’ve lived in and their former inhabitants, often my relatives.

A home is in a house, and a house can be seen as a symbol for body or man. Different parts of a house can represent different aspects of humanity, and serve as storages for memories and feelings. A house or a room is our outer body and, after skin and clothes, the second closest borderline between us and the external. By my works, I aim at dealing with these vague and ever-changing borders.

The elements in my works refer to matters and creatures that we tend to move to the periphery of creating social values. I’m interested in loosening the border between the space and the work, and my aim is to make these two meet and create unexpected feelings. In addition to contents, my strategy includes the size of elements on display, their proportions, and how they are placed in relation to each other and the premises.
