Firstlove – lit. blue. bended. blood
28.9.–21.10.2018

I guess it makes sense that we cannot look into the sun because what we see in sunlight is more significant. In 1987, Julia Kristeva associated the “black sun” with melancholy. In 2018, for me it is things like oil and plastic. For someone else it may be Jupiter. When I was younger, I often had a dream in which I did an endless pirouette in spite of my speed slowing down. It was my favorite dream. Now I can see on Instagram how some people are actually able to do it. Once again I demonstrate a scene from Béla Tarr’s film Werckmeister harmóniák. I fall off the chair. Again and again.

Firstlove – lit. blue. bended. blood features signs of untargeted desires and unspoken feelings in a space. Remains of memories – loose and dislocated, transformed into something else. It deals with a loss of meaning where tradition, structures and hierarchies persistently maintain their already collapsed esthetic system.

What is left after an illusion?

Flowing. Tolerating being visible, performing. Moving oneself elsewhere, beyond desires and needs. In a state of indecisiveness between musts and mental images. Ragged and wavering ideas. Something new sliding in. Giving up instead of rising and falling down towards painlessness. Reconciling the past with the present.

Firstlove – lit. blue. bended. blood is a continuation of my work with moving images and spaces that began in 2015 with different pasts haunting in the background: ballet, movies, books, people… The performance seen as part of the exhibition at Galleria Huuto is a follow-up to the demo I worked on in June 2018, during my Keidas residency in the Kekäläinen & Co. space at the Cable Factory.

The exhibition is based on encounters between moving images, physical existence and different materials, while also being influenced by the new Huuto premises.

Performances at Huuto: Saturday 6 October at 3 pm
Thursday 11 October at 6 pm
