Vanitas is a new media exhibition which displays something new, exciting and beautiful. It makes you think of deeper questions.
Vanitas paintings (Latin for “vanity”) are still life paintings meant as a reminder of death. The paintings contain symbols that on the one hand refer to the transience of earthly pleasures and on the other hand to the certainty of death. This painting type was especially common in the Netherlands during the 17th century.
Like many other artists, I have reflected on human existence and the ending of it. The vanitas theme is common throughout the history of painting and it’s still important in this era of celebrities and idols to remember how short life is, what really is important and to try to overcome vanity.
This exhibition updates the vanitas theme with the help of modern technology, such as video works. The works, however, are very painting-like. They are like moving paintings, but with something new – movement and awareness of time. They are minimalist, fresh, very beautiful and also slightly mysterious.
Finnish-Australian Eric Hynynen graduated with a master’s degree in painting from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2009. Hynynen works actively with new techniques and aims for clarity in his art. Often the esthetically surprising solutions create fresh, painterly results – whether it’s a video work, photograph, painting or sculptured painting.
