“Why do people say, ‘Grow some balls’? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina. Those things really take a pounding!” – Betty White
The exhibition is based on the theme of feminine heroism. The word “feminine” usually refers to women or femininity but, in a broader sense, it can describe anything that corresponds to society’s perception of femininity, whether it be behavior, appearance or style. The concept of femininity is fluid and varies depending on the culture and individual. Its expression is not confined to traditional gender roles.
The content of the exhibition is also inspired by superhero characters from popular culture. The works reflect on heroism. Empathy, intuition and social interaction skills are powerful tools in the face of adversity. A superhero is both gentle and efficient.
The word “super” originates from Latin, meaning “above,” “over” or “superior.” It is both a prefix and an adjective. As a prefix, it conveys the idea of something greater, better or excessive, like “superpower.” As an adjective, it is an informal way of describing something as excellent or very good. It emphasizes high quality or something better than the ordinary.
Saija Koponen (b. 1980) is a Helsinki-based visual artist and a versatile contributor in the visual arts field. Recurring themes in her works include physicality, ambiguity, feminine heroism and humanism as well as a fascination with color and its properties. Koponen draws inspiration from her daily life and experiences as well as from music, films, popular culture and visual art, playing with the contrast between naive and sublime, random and deliberate.
I want to thank my colleagues and friends for the conversations and presence around the works and the world. Although I largely work alone in my studio, creative work requires interaction. Exhibitions are not created alone.
