Evankeliumi

(Gallery Huuto Jätkäsaari has normal opening hours during Easter holidays!)

When creating the artworks for this exhibition I focused on recollections and associations, the experience of faith, hope and love as well as the feeling of awe and fear in front of authorities. I began to explore the conflicts that often exist between what people say and do. The name of the exhibition, Evankeliumi (The Gospel) also refers to a conflict. I am interested in playing with the meanings of words, double meanings and the possibility of completely opposite interpretations. The word evankeliumi (gospel, Old English godspell*) originally means good news. The gospel of this exhibition, however, mainly focuses on the emotional conflicts that we face on our everyday journey through life. Can the purest and most innocent forms of love encompass valuing, conditioning and measuring the amount of love? Is it even possible for us to express our love for each other without unintentionally imposing some kind of conditions?

Pauliina Jokela (b. 1975) is a Helsinki-based artist. She completed a degree in visual arts at the Southern Karelia University of Applied Sciences in 2004 and an MFA degree at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2012 specializing in sculpture.
