Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu

My art originates in my experience.

The aim of drawing is to render an image into abstract language, in order
to lessen its referential quality. To accomplish this, I use line
drawing. Line drawing offers the most versatile interpretation of a
subject because it does not necessarily define positive/negative,
figure/ground relationships.

A drawing may take only a moment to execute, but I may spend hours of
concentrated effort to transform it into a material object. Each action I
take, each material I work with contributes to the meaning of the piece.
Process and content are interdependent.

It is within an atmosphere of possibilities that I am inspired and driven
to work. My works are translations of thought, action and material into
form and content.

Joseph James (born 1979 in the United States) earned his Master’s Degree
from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. His works have been
exhibited throughout Europe and the United States and are included in the
collections of KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art, EMMA Espoo Museum of
Modern Art and Hämeenlinna Art Museum (Vexi Salmi Collection).

The exhibition has been kindly supported by Paulo Foundation, the Arts
Council of Finland, and Oskar Öflunds Foundation.

impulse dies away without the sympathy of the community.” –William
James, 1880.
