SUPERMARKET 2017 proudly invites eight Finnish galleries to this year’s Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair, one of the most international art events in the Nordic countries. Finnish galleries have been participating in Supermarket since 2008 and this year we will see both old and new artist-run galleries at the fair. Supermarket 2017 is one of the biggest showcases of Finnish visual art abroad this year. Over 50 visual artists from Finland are participating in the event.

Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair is one of the most international contemporary art events in the Nordic states hosting 75 international exhibitors from 45 cities around the world presenting works by hundreds of artists.

Supermarket 2017 will take place at Svarta Huset (The Black Box), located in the creative area of Telefonplan in Stockholm, from March 23rd to 26th 2017. In addition to the cutting-edge art that will be on show, Supermarket will as usual arrange the performance stage Red Spot, which presents new, innovative performance art from all over the world. Supermarket will also broadcast Super-TV where one can follow the fair online. Supermarket Art Magazine will be distributed for the seventh year in a row.

Supermarket is, since 2007, the Nordic countries’ leading international art fair. It is an annual artist-run art fair for artist-run galleries. The aim is to provide a showcase for artists’ initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for networks in the Swedish and international art scene.

Finnish galleries in cooperation with the Finnish Institute in Stockholm

    Galleria Huuto, Helsinki
    Galleria Huuto is an artist-run organization located in Helsinki, founded 2002. It has more than 100 members and runs two spaces: Huuto Jätkäsaari and Huuto Uudenmaankatu. Annually as many as 70 contemporary art exhibitions are organized in Huuto’s premises. The collaborative installation ”One-Room Flat” includes works of almost 20 artists.

    Galleria Lapinlahti, Helsinki
    Artist Collective Kunst curates and coordinates a non-profit contemporary art gallery, Gallery Lapinlahti in Helsinki, founded 2016. Artist Collective Kunst and Gallery Lapinlahti present ”We Troll for Love” (WTFL), a public participatory performance commenting on hate talk and bullying. The collective consists of 6 artists: Christina Holmlund, Pia Paldanius, Jarmo Palola, Sirpa Päivinen, Anu Suhonen and Julia Weckman.

    Galleria Sculptor, Helsinki
    Gallery Sculptor offers a diverse exhibition programme with a special focus on contemporary Finnish sculpting. The gallery is owned by The Association of Finnish Sculptors, founded in 1910. Among the promotion of the interests of its members the association also actively takes part in and arranges exhibitions and projects outside the gallery space.

    At Supermarket 2017 Gallery Sculptor presents works by three Finnish sculptors: Paavo Räbinä, Pauno Pohjolainen and Petri Eskelinen. The versatility of their works gives a good glimpse of what Finnish sculpture is today.

    Galleri GRO, Pietarsaari
    Galleri GRO is an artist-run and non-commercial gallery / project space in the city of Jakobstad, Finland. GRO was founded in 2012 and is run by the artists’ association Konstverket / Taidevirasto. In conjunction with exhibitions there are also various events organized, such as artist talks, discussions, screenings, performances and lectures.

    For the Supermarket Independent Art fair, GRO collaborates with artist Einat Amir (IL) in creating a series of events and conversations aiming to explore ideas of empathy generated through art.

    Kallio Kunsthalle, Helsinki
    The P14 team of curators is responsible for the exhibition programme in Kallio Kunsthalle in 2017. In addition to twelve exhibitions, we organize events, discussions and performances. The P14 group was formed during studies at Praxis curatorial department at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. The group consists of Anastasia Isakova, Mia Kivinen, Ville Laaksonen, Ulla-Maija Pitkänen, Maria Savela and Katariina Timonen.

    Kallio Kunsthalle – A pocket of art in the heart of Kallio. Its principles are based on The European Year of Volunteering 2011. It is a product of residing artists Petri Saarikko and Sasha Huber, Elokolo visitors, ex-scholars and local associations. Kallio Kunsthalle’s main partner is Helsingin Optimistit, and its site is at the ex-meeting room of the Association for Healthy Lifestyles, at Toinen linja 31 Helsinki.

    MUU Galleria, Helsinki
    The Artists’ Association MUU, founded 1987, promotes professional artists working across a wide range of disciplines. MUU has 650 professional artist members. At Supermarket 2017 MUU presents works of new member artists. The artists presented are Yassine Khaled, Ilkka Martti Kivelä, Veera Launonen, Mari Miyamoto, Leena Pukki, and Marloes van Son.

    MUU’s member artist, Emma Fält participates in Supermarket’s performance program.

    tm•galleria, Helsinki
    tm•gallery has a versatile profile focusing on new Finnish painting. Besides paintings, video works and installations are also shown. tm•gallery is managed by the Finnish Painters’ Union, which is a nationwide artists’ association with about 1 300 members. The association organizes exhibitions in collaboration with art museums and other institutions, and the gallery serves as a venue for seminars and different types of art presentations. The association also runs an artist material shop, where high quality artist materials are sold at cost price.

    At Supermarket tm•gallery exhibits three contemporary painters Tiina Heiska, Hanna Kanto, Kaarlo Stauffer and an artist couple Janne Nabb & Maria Teeri.

    TOOLBOX, Finnish German project space, Berlin
    Galerie/Projektraum TOOLBOX has been active in the Berlin art scene since September 2012. The art space is located at Wedding and is run by six Finnish artists and one German artist. TOOLBOX arranges exhibitions, exchange-exhibitions with international organizations, concerts, performance events, workshops and video screenings. TOOLBOX-videostudio is a monthly showing of international video art. TOOLBOX participates at international artist-run art fairs and arranges international group exhibitions in different art spaces and galleries across Europe. The members of Cooperative/Galerie TOOLBOX are artists Maija Helasvuo, Sampsa Indren, Minna Jatkola, Mika Karhu, Niina Räty, Juha Sääski (all FIN) and Andreas Wolf (Berlin, DE). TOOLBOX is one of the 30 artist-run galleries organized in the non-profit society ”Kolonie Wedding” Berlin.

    At Supermarket 17 TOOLBOX is showing a combination of their members and international artists: Marja Bonada (UK), Kenneth Pils (SE), Lotte Nilsson-Välimaa (SE), Fritz Stier (DE), Ira Schneider (DE), Veronika Witte (DE).
