Of Two Minds – installation
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari 2
13–28 September 2014

Of Two Minds is a joint installation by three artists. Working together offers us an opportunity to challenge ourselves and to learn from each other. It is also interesting to see how three different techniques work together. Our artistic approaches have many connections – the works each of us creates have features that arouse interest and produce a response. The development of a mutual idea, however, has a long process.

After several discussions jumping from one topic to another, our theme turned out to be choices, decision-making and the problem of endless possibilities. We are constantly forced to make choices regarding both everyday matters and greater matters that affect the direction our lives are going in. The more possibilities and alternatives we have, the more decisions we have to make. It constantly leads us to question: What do I want? Which one would be better, more responsible, more sustainable, faster or more exciting? We also see the theme as a kind of reflection of our mutual artistic process.

The final installation will be a visual expression of the process of decision-making and hesitation. The Of Two Minds installation shows the group of choices slowly swaying in the air. Is there a right or wrong, good or even better choice?

Tiina Raitanen, Emma Rönnholm and Salla Vapaavuori have known each other since they were students at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. They graduated during 2011 and 2012. Raitanen’s installations combine materials she has found with elements she has worked on. Rönnholm creates installations and works with existing objects and often utilizes motors and other mechanical elements. Vapaavuori works with installations using a variety of techniques from sculpture to sound, light, video and text.
