Galleria Huuto, Jätkäsaari, Jätkä 1

Galleria Huuto is open also on Ascension Day Thursday 10th May 2018, welcome!

Welcome to my minimalist but oh so expressive, poor woman’s palace of Versailles.

I build sculptures using broken porcelain and ceramic objects. My sculpture technique is about breaking, rebuilding, arranging, creating shapes and combining structures and colors. It’s a mosaic-like working method. Porcelain cats, dogs and human figures are broken by my hammer into unexpected pieces. When putting them back together, they get a new personality and end up in surprising situations. When working with porcelain and ceramic objects, I am able to find many links to my own childhood and 80s girlhood. There is a little me who needs to be broken into pieces in order to be able to rebuild herself as a bolder shape.

Porcelain became a fashionable phenomenon in Europe during the rococo period when people wanted to use this fragile, shiny and elegant material to decorate their homes. Now in the 2010s, porcelain is worthless junk lying abandoned on flea market tables, sold for peanuts. I also like the thought of using something useless as an element in my art, a material that already exists in the world.

In the early 1700s, one of the characteristics of the rococo style was the pursuit of systematic asymmetry. This aim resembles my own haphazard way of working. These elements, among others, are what create Maria Stereo’s Rococo.

Maria Stereo (b.1979) is a visual artist from Sahalahti, Finland. She expresses her vision of aesthetics through her art.
