Reliefs for Animals is an exchange and collaboration between two artist-run galleries: Galleria Huuto, Helsinki, Finland and Galleri Rostrum, Malmö, Sweden. In September, artists from Malmö exhibited in Galleria Huuto, and now is the turn for the Finnish artists’ exhibition in Malmö.

The theme “Reliefs for Animals” is inspired by the current debate regarding our relationship with plants and animals, which is about how we relate to life forms other than our own – our language and attitudes, our opinions and preconceptions. The traditional view that animals only react based on reflexes and external stimuli is giving way to the realization that both plants and animals have intelligence and a will and understand much more of their surroundings than we might have thought. Charles Darwin already wrote that there is no fundamental difference between humans and higher animals in terms of their emotional, mental and moral abilities.

The exhibition project is an initiative of Gunzi Holmström, who organised a similar exhibition exchange with Galleri 54 in Gothenburg in 2021.
