Risako Yamanoi
Next time, I will remember
14 October–6 November 2022

The starting points for Risako Yamanoi’s solo exhibition Next time, I will remember are old photographs found at the artist’s grandparents’ house and a strange dream she had afterwards. In the dream, the artist has a conversation with someone who was close to her when she was a child but realizes that she cannot clearly recall the person’s face or voice. This experience has led the artist to wonder how much memory she has already lost and, if most of the memories are to be forgotten, what kind of memories will remain with her in the end.

The exhibition consists of a series of prints, drawings, found photos, and text. It talks about memories that are fading but inevitably connected to one’s identity, and attempts to explore the boundary between memories, dreams, and reality.

Risako Yamanoi is a Helsinki-based visual artist who mainly works with printmaking, installation, and publication. She has completed her master’s degree in printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki. Her interest lies in people’s personal storytelling. Through her practice, she observes how we construct personal narratives with memories and objects around us.

The exhibition has been supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland in the form of a Covid-19 grant.
