LAURA NISSINEN
Photography exhibition Aleatory Variable
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari 1
27 March – 13 April 2014

Laura Nissinen’s (b. 1975) exhibition Aleatory Variable features photographic works that have been produced using experimental methods with the aim of questioning the definition of a photograph and the conventional ways to present them.

The photographs included in the exhibition have been processed, for example, by burning and cutting the negative. The artist has mainly used recycled film material that was found from her own files, her friends’ freezers and film laboratory dumpsters.

The works have been influenced by phenomenologist Jean-Luc Nancy’s approach which suggests that a photograph has a skin that cannot only be seen but also touched. In addition, the titles of the photographs and the methods refer to artists, including Laila Pullinen and Lucio Fontana, whose works have given Nissinen inspiration and offered working methods.

This exhibition is part of Nissinen’s dissertation entitled “Abstraktio suomalaisessa valokuvataiteessa” (“Abstraction in Finnish photography”) which she is working on at the Aalto University Department of Photography. Nissinen’s works have previously been displayed in solo and group exhibitions, both in Finland and abroad.
