A Collection
24.5. – 16.6.2019

A Collection is a series of investigations about material, process and the things collected along the way. It is inspired by the natural landscape, the origins of ceramic glazes and a personal attraction to rock collections. In part this project is a makers attempt to get in touch with her medium.

For thirty consecutive days Dana set out to explore her environment and collect working materials. Scavenging from the surrounding mountains as well as the edges of the lagoon. Finding working material from what was lying around. Exhibited are the journey maps, collection photographs and some of the research that ensued.

This exhibition introduces an exploration of ceramic material from inception to finale, from picking up stones to ceramic sculptures, and includes material tests and found objects. This exhibition questions the common idea that the final art piece is the most important or valuable part of an art practise, and highlights the process as just as provoking and relevant. This series of work was created while Artist in Residence at Skaftfell Center for Visual Art in Iceland.

Dana Neilson is a Helsinki based artist. A photographer by education her practice also includes ceramics, sculpture and video art. The overarching theme is her work is the relationship humans have with their environment usually encompassing the themes of experience and influence. At the moment her main points of inquiry are what’s natural about human nature? and ceramics from scratch. She is a graduate from Aalto University’s Visual Culture and Contemporary Art Masters program. Her work has been exhibited internationally.
