What is fascinating about charcoal is how it glides on the paper, creating a feeling of the passing of time, immateriality and movement. I see the white surface of the paper, the emptiness, as an active element and try to turn it into a space filled with tension.

In the works featured in this exhibition, the marks left by charcoal are ambiguous: they could be the outlines of characters, inner movements or surrounding environments. One’s identity is not a stable subject, it is a fluid experience affected by the environment, events and memories. I hope that my drawings are able to convey a feeling of something flashing by, momentariness, transience, intuitiveness and complexity.
