The exhibition features portraits and paintings based on observations of my surroundings.

In my work, I am interested in what is specific but at the same time commonplace. I paint aspects of life, sights that draw my attention, and I strive to identify the amazement and emotional response they evoke. By lingering on and paying attention to moments and people while working, I am able to slow things down.

The people in my portraits are friends and acquaintances who I asked to sit for me for some hours in my studio. I paint in daylight and rely on a kind of spontaneous logic, in which a person’s characteristics and presence are the key elements. I approach portrait painting with an interest in here and now and what happens both psychologically and in terms of painting when meeting the subject of the portrait.

Matilda Enegren (b. 1989) lives and works in Helsinki. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg in 2015 and she also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Novia University of Applied Sciences and Arts (2012). She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in both Finland and Sweden. Her works are included in the Rovaniemi Art Museum’s collection (Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation) and in the art collections of several Swedish municipalities and regions.
