My exhibition, Souvenir, took me back to one of the best trips of my life. The significance of that trip is probably due to my sensitive age when a crush was something much greater or due to the fact that it was impossible to understand my feelings because of the distance, to get an ending to the story.
The title work, Souvenir, consists of ten paintings on clothes as well as of small repainted souvenir pictures, a love letter I received when I was young and a large deer sculpture. The works are based on real memories that got mixed with imagination as the work progressed.
The work entitled Letter consists of 90 drawings on writing paper with bird patterns. I drew them for a friend of mine who went sailing for a year. Our pictorial correspondence has continued ever since.
The works known as North-facing window 1 & 2 are 3 x 2.3 m colored pencil drawings on paper, reproducing one part of my home in meticulous detail. My works welcome the viewer to my home. I open up my personal world to the viewer. The idea comes from interior design magazines and programs where people show their homes.
“The world was so different in 1999. I didn’t have my own email address or a cell phone. I used my mom’s old camera and it took over a month for a love letter to reach me from the other side of the world. Now I live in a house with a living room that I have drawn for the exhibition using colored pencils. I am part of the present: I draw pictures for my friend and I am able to send a photo of the picture to her through a free mobile application. Everything is here and now. I have a million digital photos stored on my camera. I have never received a paper letter from my husband.”
